From Bladesmith to The Catholic Blacksmith

People often ask me how I got started in blacksmithing.

Like many smiths, I didn't begin by making crosses or religious artwork. I started as a bladesmith, forging kitchen knives, hunting knives, and other cutting tools. I was fascinated by the process of taking a piece of raw steel and transforming it into something useful with fire, hammer, and anvil.

Over the years, my skills grew and my interests expanded. I moved beyond blades and into traditional artisan blacksmithing, creating a wider variety of hand-forged pieces and exploring the craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.

At the same time, something else was happening in my life.

My Catholic faith was growing.

As my relationship with God deepened, I found myself wanting to create work that reflected not only my skills as a blacksmith but also the beliefs that guide my life. I began forging crosses, crucifixes, prayer aids, candle holders, and other pieces inspired by my Catholic faith.

What started as a craft became something more meaningful.

Today, every piece I create at The Catholic Blacksmith is made with the same tools, techniques, and attention to detail that I have spent more than fifteen years developing at the forge. Every hammer blow, every bend of steel, and every finishing detail is completed by hand with the goal of creating something that will endure for generations.

In a world filled with mass-produced products, I believe there is something special about owning an item that was shaped by hand. Not simply because it is handmade, but because it was created with purpose.

Many of the pieces I make are intended to become family heirlooms. A crucifix hanging in a home today may someday hang in the home of a son or daughter. A prayer candle holder used during evening prayers may one day be passed down to grandchildren. These are not products designed for a season. They are pieces created to accompany a family's faith journey for decades.

That responsibility means something to me.

Whether I am forging a crucifix for a family's prayer corner, creating a Confirmation gift, engraving a favorite prayer into wood rock and steel, or crafting a devotional piece for someone's home, I understand that these items often become part of life's most meaningful moments.

I still enjoy creating practical forged items such as grilling tools, outdoor accessories, and the occasional knife but the heart of The Catholic Blacksmith is creating handcrafted pieces that help bring faith into everyday life while preserving the traditions of American craftsmanship.
